Johnnie Underdue Obituary

Johnnie Ray Underdue, son of the late Johnnie Lee Underdue and Vatcherie Lockhart Underdue, began his journey through life on Sunday, May 9th, 1954 in Northampton County, North Carolina.

Early in life, Johnnie Ray accepted Christ and united in Christian Fellowship with Zion Hill Baptist Church, Seaboard, North Carolina. He was educated in the public schools of Northampton County. He later relocated to Albany, New York, where he became a self-employed Building Contractor. As life progressed, he settled in Maryland and lived out his dream of entrepreneurship.

Johnnie Ray had a carefree spirit. He never took himself, anything or anyone, too seriously. Spending quality time with his family and friends brought him great joy. He loved cooking and was very confident that his food was good. He was always willing to tackle any task - a true Jack-of-all-Trades!

On Monday, October 9th, 2023, Johnnie Ray peacefully departed this life, while surrounded by his loving family, at the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center, located in Largo, Maryland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jean Underdue.

Our family is a circle of strength and love, with every birth and every union, the circle will grow, every joy shared adds more love, every crisis faced together, makes the circle stronger. Cherished memories will forever remain in the hearts of: his siblings, Larry (Dollie) Underdue of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Viola Mae Williams of Chesapeake, Virginia, Rosa (William) Parker of Sharpsburg, North Carolina, Lucille Underdue of Bowie, Maryland, Magdalene (Randolph) Braswell of Whitakers, North Carolina, Carolyn (Jimmie) Turner of Fort Washington, Maryland and Clara (Maurice) Taylor of Weldon, North Carolina; seven aunts, Ruth Lockhart, Blanche Lockhart, Emily Cumbo, Mary Faison, Margaret Richardson, Nancy Whitfield and Mamie Cumberbatch; three nieces; ten nephews; five great-nieces; five great-nephews; a host of relative and friends; including a special friend, Jeanie D. Hall of Mansfield, Ohio.
