Joseph Epps Obituary

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the

heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time

to pluck up that which is planted;

~Ecclesiastes 3: 1-2

 Joseph Ray Epps, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, was born on May 10th, 1942, in Jackson, North Carolina, to the late Louise Epps. He peacefully passed away on March 10th, 2025, at Hampton Manor Assisted Living Facility in Gaston, North Carolina, with his loved ones by his side.

Joe was the second of five siblings and grew up with a strong sense of work ethic and family values. From a young age, he took on the responsibility of helping care for his mother and younger siblings. While his siblings went on to pursue their careers, Joe remained in Jackson, where he built a life with his wife, Annie Lee Burgwyn, whom he married in 1965. Together, they raised a family, and Joe became a dedicated provider, husband, father, brother, and uncle.

Joe’s work life was diverse, and he worked numerous jobs throughout the years before retiring from International Paper (Paper Mill) in Seaboard, North Carolina. For many decades, Joe was also the proud owner and operator of “Ray’s Place,” a local business that served as a gathering spot for the community. Whether people were stopping by to relax, play pool, or even buy tires, Joe’s establishment became a staple in the area. He continued to run “Ray’s Place” even after his retirement, until his health began to decline.

A man of strong character, Joe was well-known and deeply respected by family, friends, and the community. Known for his laid-back attitude, he had a way with people, always engaging in conversation with anyone and everyone. He was often heard saying exactly what was on his mind, and his love for making money, playing pool, and talking trash became part of his legendary charm. “A man who knew how to make a dollar,” Joe made an impact wherever he went, and his presence was felt by all who knew him.

Joe is now reunited with his mother, Louise Epps, his brothers Tommy Epps, Sr., Jimmy Epps, and his grandson, Oscar Ray Epps, Jr. (Hercules), who all preceded him in death.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Annie, and their three children: Linda E. Hinds of Clinton, Maryland; Oscar Epps, Sr. (LaKeisha) of Jackson, North Carolina; and Joel Motley of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. He is also survived by his sister Charlotte Epps of College Park, Maryland; his brother Earl Epps of Lorton, Virginia; five grandchildren: Shakara Hinds, Octavia Epps, Justin Davis, Jordan Davis, and Travon Watson; and five great-grandchildren. Additionally, Joe will be fondly remembered by his nieces Kimberly Epps-Louers and Annie Marie Portillo, nephews Adrian, Michael, Tommy Jr., Earl, Antione, and Jalen Epps, as well as a host of great-nieces and nephews, extended family, and many friends.

Joe’s legacy of love, hard work, and humor will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
