Josephine Dunn Obituary

The Life

Josephine Tyner Dunn was born on April 14, 1952 in Northampton County to Mary and Joseph Tyner (deceased). She attended Willis Hare School and graduated from Northampton County High School-East. Following graduation, Josephine pursued post-secondary education at Shaw University and North Carolina Central University. She departed this earthly life on February 27, 2021.

The Ministry

Josephine’s passion was playing the piano in church. She dedicated her life to her music ministry, beginning in college with playing for the Shaw University gospel choir. She served as the Minister of Music for over 38 years at White Oak Baptist Church, Apex, NC. After which she moved back to Murfreesboro and began playing for Mount Hope Baptist Church on 2nd and 4th Sundays and Nebo Baptist Church as needed. Josephine had a special place in her heart for all of the choirs and choir members she had trained over the years and spoke often of the joy ministering to God through song brought her.

The Legacy

Josephine also dedicated her life to bettering the education of young people in North Carolina. Immediately after college, she began to teach music and chorus in Wake County Public Schools. She continued this work in Northampton County Schools and became a School Administrator. Josephine served as Principal at Northampton County High School-East, Gaston Middle School, and Jackson-Eastside Elementary School. Within the last year, Josephine continued her school involvement serving at Conway Middle School in a variety of capacities. To further her advocacy of education in Northampton County, Josephine served on the Northampton County School Board until her passing.

Josephine leaves to carry on her legacy: two children, the lights of her life, Jonita (Anthony) and Antonio (Jessica). She also leaves to cherish her memory her adoring mom, Mary Tyner, a special aunt, Shirley Burke, two loving siblings; Charles (Betty) and Jeanette (Reggie), three beloved nephews and their families; Charles Jr. (Candace, Trey, Caya, and Charlice), Chris and RJ (Carly, Treyce, Julian, Carter and Jaylee), and one special niece, Jenee’ (Jael). Josephine also leaves her earthly mark with the darlings of her heart, her eight grandchildren; Inayiah, Jada, Anthony Maurice, Jalisa, NyAsia, Jalyn, AJ, and Janiyah as well as a multitude of extended family and friends who will all cherish her life, ministry, and legacy.
