And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying.
There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
~Revelations 21: 4
Today, we pause to honor and celebrate the life and legacy of Joyce Odessa Kee—a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and cherished friend. With a presence marked by warmth, charisma, and a radiant spirit, Joyce left an indelible impression on all who had the joy of knowing her.
Born on Sunday, March 4th, 1956, in Northampton County, North Carolina, Joyce was a precious gift entrusted to the care of her loving parents, Rufus Kee Sr. and Dora Mason Kee. Raised in a home rooted in faith, honesty, respect, love, and laughter, she carried these core values throughout her life and into every relationship she nurtured.
Joyce received her early education through the Northampton County Public School System and was a proud graduate of Northampton County High School – East, where she was well-liked and admired by her peers. From a young age, she accepted Christ, was baptized, and became a faithful member of Hills Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, North Carolina.
Joyce possessed a remarkable ability to uplift and inspire others. Her vibrant personality, kind words, and bright smile lit up every room she entered. Her boundless energy and joyful spirit made her a beacon of light to all who crossed her path.
A gifted cook with a particular talent for baking, Joyce took great pride in preparing meals and sharing her signature cakes—always made with love—with her family and friends.
Professionally, Joyce found her calling as a preschool teacher. She poured her heart into her work at Children's Harbor Child Care Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, where she was adored for her infectious laughter, nurturing nature, and unwavering patience. She had a unique gift for connecting with children, making learning both joyful and safe.
In the early hours of Sunday, August 10th, 2025, Joyce peacefully transitioned into eternal rest while in the compassionate care of Portsmouth Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus Kee Sr. and Dora Mason Kee; and her siblings: Ester Jackson, Marjorie Harris, Dorothy Lawrence, Delois Kee, Mary Reed, and Shepard Kee.
Joyce’s beautiful life and memory will forever be treasured by those she leaves behind: her devoted son, Terry Kee; two beloved grandchildren, Terr’yion Stroud and Princeton Barnes, all of Portsmouth, Virginia; one brother, Rufus Kee Jr., and one sister, Clarene Kee, both of Garysburg, North Carolina; her cherished brother-in-law, Michael Harris of Portsmouth, Virginia; a host of loving nieces and nephews, including Domoniques Lawrence, Keion Lawrence, Addison Lawrence, and Valerie L. Jones, all of Portsmouth, Virginia; as well as many cousins, dear friends, and all those whose lives she touched.
Though she is no longer with us in the physical world, Joyce’s legacy of love, kindness, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
