Joyce Buffaloe Mills, age 54, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 21st, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. Born on Monday, September 21st, 1970, in Northampton County (Jackson), North Carolina. Joyce was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose warmth and kindness touched all who knew her.
A proud graduate of Northampton County High School, Joyce furthered her education at Roanoke Chowan Community College, where she specialized in Early Child Development. Her passion for nurturing young minds led her to a fulfilling thirteen career as a teacher at Weldon Daycare. Later, she continued her dedication to education as a Paraprofessional, positively impacting the lives of countless adults. Joyce’s unwavering commitment to her clients and her community exemplified her generous spirit and love for helping others.
Joyce’s life was a testament to the power of love, compassion, and resilience. Known for her infectious laughter and ability to bring joy to those around her, she was a beacon of light to her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her dedication to her family was evident in every aspect of her life, as she found immense joy in spending time with her loved ones.
Joyce was preceded in death by her stepfather, Lloyd Anthony Stephenson; her grandmother at heart, Madge Odell Warren Stephenson; her grandparents, Lillie Mae Buffaloe and Louis Pernell Buffaloe; her grandmother, Odessa Melvin; her brother, Anthony Buffaloe; and other cherished family members.
She is survived by her husband, Edward Mills Jr.; her loving daughters, Brianna Petticolas (Shawn Clemonts) and Brittany Petticolas; her precious grandchildren, Aziyah Clemonts and Greysen Hardy; her mother, Sylvia Stephenson; her father, Wilbert Melvin, Jr.; her siblings, Ebony Stephenson, Rhonda Goode (Emanuel), Timothy Boone, and Reginald Melvin; her brother-at-heart, Kendall Long; her niece-at-heart, LaKenya Long; and a special cousin, Aalayah Buffaloe. Joyce also leaves behind a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will forever treasure the memories they shared with her.
Joyce’s legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. She was a pillar of strength and an example of what it means to live a life dedicated to others.
Joyce Buffaloe Mills will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Her light will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of her family and friends, carrying her memory forward for generations to come.
