“God saw the road was getting rough, the hills were hard to climb, He
gently closed his eyes, And whispered,“Peace Be Thine.”
Juan Lamont Pierce, Jr. was born on December 28th, 1981, at 1:57 a.m., bringing immense joy to his proud parents, Shelby Cumbo Pierce and the late Juan Lamont Pierce, Sr. Weighing a healthy 8 pounds and 4 ounces, Juan was a smiling, happy baby whose joyful spirit shone through from the very beginning. He brought light and laughter to his family and all who knew him.
Juan was raised in faith at Jerusalem Baptist Church, where he remained a lifelong member. At the age of 12, he made a personal decision to accept Christ as his Lord and Savior—a defining moment in his spiritual journey.
Juan was educated in the Northampton County School system, where he thrived both academically and socially. He was an active student, a member of the Academically Gifted program and the Beta Club. His love for words led him to compete at the state level in the North Carolina Spelling Bee, where he proudly placed second. A well-rounded young man, Juan also played baseball for several years and practiced Karate.
His involvement extended beyond the classroom. Juan was an enthusiastic participant in both school and church programs and received numerous trophies for his achievements. At Jerusalem Baptist Church, he sang in the choir and was frequently invited by TJ Tyler to sing his beloved rendition of “Amazing Grace.”
An entrepreneur at heart, Juan used his summers to run a lawn service, and in the winter months, he sold pecans by the pound. He also cherished the time spent fishing with his father, creating lifelong memories that brought him great joy.
Juan had a heart for people. He was known for his kind and generous nature, always ready to help anyone in need—whether through a warm word, a ride, a meal, shelter, or simply being present. He gave without judgment, treating everyone with dignity and care. His sweet, gentle spirit and unique way of connecting with others left a lasting impression.
Of all his accomplishments, Juan’s greatest pride and joy was his beloved son, David Preston Pierce. Being a father was the role he cherished most in life.
Juan leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and service. He is survived by his son, David Preston Pierce; David’s mother, Stephanie Nicole Wheeler; and his devoted mother, Shelby Cumbo Pierce. He is also survived by his two sisters: Denise Pierce Henry (James) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Amy Pierce Cobham of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Also left to cherish his memory are three uncles: Ronnie Cumbo (Diana) of Woodland, North Carolina; Ricky R. Cumbo (Elsie) of Severn, North Carolina; and Maurice Bazemore of Woodland, North Carolina. He is fondly remembered by his nieces, Kania LaNise Davis and Alicia Cobham, and his nephews, David James Henry, Joshua Matthew Henry, and Pierce Alexander Cobham—as well as a host of cousins and dear friends.
Juan’s life was a testament to love, faith, and generosity. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
