Katherine Branch Obituary

The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of

strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow;

for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

~Psalms 90:10

Today, we gather to honor and celebrate the life, love, and legacy of Katherine Tann Branch, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. Katherine graced this earth on Saturday, April 28th, 1922, born to Vernon Tann and Anna Parker Tann in Northampton County, North Carolina. Growing up in a nurturing environment, Katherine attended the public schools of Northampton County, where her character blossomed into one of kindness and compassion.

Katherine’s faith in God was a cornerstone of her life. She believed deeply in God, the Father Almighty, who created heaven and earth, and her unwavering faith was her strength and guide. She became a devoted member of Galilee Baptist Church in Branchville, Virginia, where her love for God grew even deeper, and she embraced opportunities to serve and uplift those around her.

In the words of Maya Angelou, “Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.” Katherine found this enduring love when she met and married the love of her life, Charlie Branch. They united in holy matrimony on Saturday, June 10th, 1938, beginning a lifelong journey together filled with love, respect, and shared dreams.

Despite limited formal education, Katherine cultivated a strong work ethic and a determined spirit. Understanding the importance of supporting her family, she worked diligently as a domestic engineer and later with Narricot Industries in Boykins, Virginia. Her life was a testament to values of hard work, humility, and compassion—qualities that radiated in her love for family, friends, and community.

A North Carolina native, Katherine made her home in Boykins, Virginia, where she spent countless years nurturing her family and enriching the lives of those around her. Known for embracing the beauty of the world, she found joy in spending quality time with her loved ones and sharing in life’s simple pleasures.

On the morning of Wednesday, November 6th, 2024, Katherine Tann Branch, at the blessed age of 102, passed away peacefully at Bon Secours Mercy Health in Franklin, Virginia. In addition to her parents and her devoted husband, Charlie, Katherine was preceded in death by her adopted daughter, Mary Tann Gardner; four sisters, Susie Ridley, Nettie Harris, Maggie Jones, and Clara Rogers; and three brothers, Charles Tann, Jessie Tann, and Colie Lee Harris.

Her life was filled with acts of love and thoughtfulness, always caring for the needs of others. Katherine’s sweet spirit, caring heart, and generosity will be fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched. She leaves behind her cherished granddaughter, Arianna Gardner; three great-grandchildren; a special nephew, James Harris; and a large, loving family that includes multiple generations of nieces and nephews and countless relatives, who will forever remember her warmth and enduring love.
