Leon 'Big Lee' Vincent Obituary

Yea thou I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table for me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

- Psalms 23: 4-6

Leon Vincent, son of the late Mary Elizabeth Vincent Kelly was born on Wednesday, July 3, 1957 in Northampton County, North Carolina.

‘Big Lee’, as he was affectionately called by his loving family and friends, was educated in the Northampton County Public School System, graduating from Gumberry High School. Having God as an integral part of his upbringing, he knew the importance of having Christ in his life. Leon believed in God; the Father Almighty, who created heaven and earth and he possessed strong faith in Christ. He fellowshipped with the Roanoke Chapel Missionary Baptist Church of Jackson, North Carolina until his health declined.

Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life; everyone must carry out a concrete assignment that demands fulfillment. Therein he cannot be replaced, nor can his life be repeated, thus, everyone’s task is unique as his specific opportunity to implement it. (Viktor E. Frankl) Leon held various positions of employment throughout his career. However, plumbing was his artistry. He believed he was the best in the field! Leon also served his country in the United States Army from June 8, 1977 to July 27, 1977, before being Honorably Discharged.

‘Big Lee’, was loved and will be greatly missed by many throughout his community. His smile and genuine personality afforded him the opportunity to make several friends. Although he had many physical challenges, he was a great inspiration to all, as he exhibited strength and tenacity. The 4th of July was Leon’s favorite holiday. In addition to it being the day after his birthday, it was when the Vincent Family Reunion was held, and he could spend quality time with those he loved.

“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” (II Timothy 4: 6-7) On Wednesday, February 22, 2023, Leon peacefully transitioned to eternal rest: while in the care of ECU Health Bertie Hospital - Windsor, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by: his mother, Mary Elizabeth Kelly and a sister, Barbara McEviley.

Leon shared and received love from many as he journeyed through this life. Cherished memories will forever remain in the hearts of: his children, Tyrone (Shawnta) of San Antonio, Texas, Nina (Kendrick) of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina and Jamesha of Garysburg, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Tori, Mya, Tamia, Tristian and Kishon; three brothers, Larry (Melinda) of Richmond, Virginia, Melvin (Veronica) of Blackstone, Virginia and Derrick of Richmond, Virginia; two sisters, Jacqueline (Nathaniel) of Emporia, Virginia and Cheryl of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; uncle, Willie Vincent of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; aunt, Lois Gary of Knightdale, North Carolina; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
