Forever Our “Sunshine”...

     With hearts filled with love and gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we celebrate the precious legacy of Lois Lee Nichols Boone.  At the age of 87, our beloved mother and grandmother peacefully entered eternal rest on Saturday, June 13th, 2026, at UNC Nash Hospital in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, surrounded by the love and comforting presence of her devoted family.

     Lois was born on Thursday, November 3rd, 1938, to the late John and Mary Nichols, and from the very beginning, her life radiated warmth, kindness, and unwavering faith. A woman of grace and strength, she would go on to become a loving wife, nurturing mother, faithful servant, and cherished friend to many.

     Mom united in holy matrimony with the love of her life, Herman Lee Boone, and together they built a home firmly rooted in faith, family, hard work, and unwavering devotion to one another. Their beautiful union was blessed with four children and a legacy of love that continues to flourish through generations.

     Known affectionately as “Sunshine,” Mom truly lived up to her name. Her vibrant spirit, warm smile, and compassionate heart brought joy and comfort to everyone blessed to know her. More than anything, her life reflected the love of Christ—not merely in words she spoke, but through the kindness she extended, the generosity she shared, and the service she rendered to others each day.

     A faithful and devoted member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, Lois worshiped, served, and generously shared her many gifts for decades. Her dedication to the ministry and church family was evident through her faithful service in numerous capacities. She was a devoted member of the Gospel Chorus, faithfully served as Treasurer for the choir, worked diligently as a missionary, and faithfully attended Wednesday Bible Study.

      Among her many contributions to the church, one of her proudest accomplishments was advocating for and helping secure the construction of a church ramp on the fellowship hall, ensuring that individuals with mobility challenges could access and fully participate in worship and church activities. Mom firmly believed that everyone should be able to enter the Lord’s house with dignity, grace, and ease.

      Beyond her church service, Mom was known and admired for another extraordinary gift—her baking. She was especially famous for her stunning wedding cakes, delicious pineapple cakes, rich chocolate cakes, and her unforgettable banana pudding topped with meringue, all lovingly prepared and enjoyed by family, friends, and countless others. She also found joy in crocheting and had a love for wearing colorful, vibrant outfits that beautifully reflected her joyful spirit and radiant personality.

     Lois was preceded in glory by her beloved parents, John and Mary Nichols; her devoted husband, Herman Lee Boone; her siblings, Ralph, Curtis, Larry, and Randolph Nichols; and her loving grandson, Michael Vaughan.

     Though our hearts grieve her earthly absence, we rejoice in the beautiful memories and enduring love she leaves behind. Remaining to cherish and honor her precious legacy are her two daughters, Dianne Walden (Randolph) and Bonnie Boone (Sean); and her two sons, Herman Boone, Jr. and Gregory Dean Boone (Traci).

She is also lovingly survived by her cherished siblings, Cornelia Byrd, Jo Ann Phillips, Mary Smallwood, John Nichols, Jr., and Raymond Nichols; one beloved sister-in-law, Justine Boone; and one devoted brother-in-law, Eddie Futrell.

     In addition, Mom leaves a lasting imprint upon the lives of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family, and dear friends who were blessed to know and love her.

     Though Sunshine’s earthly journey has ended, her warmth, faith, kindness, and radiant love will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her. As sunlight lingers long after dawn, so too shall her memory remain—a comforting reminder of a life well lived and deeply loved.
