For we who depart this world knowing our eternity is secure
through the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, there is no weeping
or sorrow. Still, as we attend the funeral of a believer, though
it may be a celebration of a life well-lived, we will mourn and
miss our loved one until we are once again reunited with them in
Heaven. - Matthew 25:23, 34
With heavy hearts, we gather today to honor the life and legacy of Louis McKinley Garris, who passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, August 8th, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 6th, 1943, in Jackson, North Carolina, Louis was the beloved son of the late James and Lillie Garris.
Louis was a man who lived his life in service to his country, state, and community. In May 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served with dedication in the Infantry on both active and reserve duty until his honorable discharge in July 1970. His commitment to service extended into his civilian life as well. Louis served as a prison guard at Odom Prison from 1969 to 1974 and at Southampton Prison from 1974 to 2008. He carried out his duties with honor, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to his work.
After retiring, Louis found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed fishing, hosting community events, and repairing lawn mowers. Known as a man of few words, Louis expressed his love through his actions. He was admired for his strong sense of duty, his easy-going spirit, his quiet strength, and his unwavering willingness to help others. His radiant smile and signature “hand wave-off ” will forever be cherished by all who knew him.
Louis was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lillie Garris; his brothers, James Lee and Alex Garris; and his sister, Audrey Garris. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his devoted wife, Leona W. Garris of Conway, NC; his sons: Louis McCoy Garris (Taunishia) of Murfreesboro, NC, Reginald Garris of Greensboro, NC, Randy Garris (Kim) of Killeen, TX, Derrick Mitchell of Conway, NC, and Carlos Mitchell of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his daughters: Kimberly Britt of Portsmouth, VA, Shaketa Powell (Michael) of Rich Square, NC, and Nakia Garris of Baltimore, MD; his brothers: Wade Garris (Barbara) of Paterson, NJ, and Bennie Garris (Elizabeth) of Fuquay-Varina, NC; his sisters: Shirley Tann (Curtis) of Paterson, NJ, and Dianna Garris of Hampton, VA; twenty-one grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Louis will be remembered for his quiet strength, his loving heart, and his dedication to those he held dear. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
