Martha Cotton Obituary

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have

kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of

righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give

me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also

that love his appearing.”

~ II Timothy 4: 7 - 8

Martha Ann Newsome Cotton, affectionately known as “Shoeboot,” was born on May 19th, 1928, in Littleton, North Carolina, to the late Jack and Pennie Tabron Newsome. She peacefully entered eternal life on Sunday, September 29th, 2024, at the age of 96.

Martha was a devoted wife and mother, whose commitment to her family was unwavering. As the wife of a sharecropper, she faced many challenges, but her determination to provide her children with an education was resolute. She made sure they never missed school to work in the fields, insisting that education was not optional.

A hard worker with strong values, Martha often made clothing for her children by hand, a skill that later allowed her to find employment at several manufacturing plants in Rich Square, Seaboard, and Weldon, North Carolina, where she worked as a talented seamstress.

Her love for beautification extended beyond the home. Martha had a gift for making floral arrangements and took pride in maintaining her yard, which was always well-manicured.

Known to have a “green thumb,” she could make almost anything grow in her garden.

While many knew her as “Shoeboot,” there was another side of Martha that reflected her deep kindness and generosity. She was a no-nonsense person, yet compassionate and giving. She often opened her home to those in need, providing shelter and food. She also ensured that children whose families had fallen on hard times were clothed. Martha was always willing to help and was known for taking action when needed.

Martha was a long-time member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Seaboard, North Carolina. After the passing of her husband and son, she joined Roanoke Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Garysburg, North Carolina.

In her later years, due to health circumstances, Martha became a resident of Hampton Manor Assisted Living in Gaston, North Carolina, where she was lovingly cared for by the staff, along with the support of Gentiva Hospice of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

Martha was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Claude Edwin Cotton, who passed on March 10, 1983, and her son, James Thomas Cotton. She was also preceded by her parents, eight brothers, and two sisters.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her devoted children: Claudine Wilson (Roland) of Garysburg, NC; Bertha M. Shearin (the late Morris) of Washington, DC; and Betty C. Vincent (the late Wardie) of Henrico, NC. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Martha’s life was a testament to hard work, love, and generosity. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
