To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven” Ecclesiastes 3:1
A Time To Be Born . . .
Mary Jane Parker was born in North Hampton County, (Margarettsville) North Carolina to Rufus “Sonny Boy” & Gertrude (DeLoatch) Parker on July 5, 1931. She was one of 14 children all raised in a God-fearing home.
. . . A Time To Plant
Mary Jane began and completed her education in the North Hampton County Public School System. She accepted Jesus Christ into her life at an early age at Allen Chapel AME Church, in Conway, NC. She lived and worked on the ‘family farm” where they were Sharecroppers until she met and married the love of her life, Archie L. Gatling, Sr. in 1951.
. . . A Time To Bring Forth
To this union two beautiful children were born, Archie L. Jr. and Gwendolyn Diane. These two are the pride and joy of their Mother. They later became her caregivers and will carry her great legacy on.
. . . A Time To Build Up
In addition to working and being a homemaker, Mary Jane loved cooking, fishing, gardening and decorating. You could usually find both a shovel and a fishing pole in the trunk of her car. If while driving along, she saw a plant or flower she liked, she would stop, dig it up and transplant it into her yard and if an opportunity to fish came along, she did not pass it up. Her green thumb was very profitable, and the local A&P Food Markets often sought out and paid the Gatling family for their fresh, garden grown produce. Another one of her passions that was also a profitable pleasure was her love for cooking. She was an excellent cook and cooked at Roanoke Rapids Hospital and Holiday Inn for many years. She concluded her cooking career at Truck Stop of America after many years of faithful service and was a full-time housewife until her husband passed in 2000. Mary Jane enjoyed being a wife and mother and was always looking for ways to make her house a home and give her family a better future.
During their married life, The Gatling family spent many holidays at the Parker home in Seaboard, NC. The gatherings had lots of food, “spirits”, music and laughter. Mary Jane could be described as the life of the party.
. . . A Time For Family
In 2007 Mary Jane moved to Burlington, NJ to be closer to both of her children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. When the entire Gatling Clan packed up and relocated to Snellville, GA in 2014, she moved once again and settled in the neighboring town of Lawrenceville, GA where she resided until God called her Home.
. . . A Time To Weep
Proceeding her in death are her parents, Rufus & Gertrude Parker. Her husband, Archie Gatling, Sr. Her sisters, Dorothy Parker-Willis, Blannie Parker-Edwards, Louvenia Parker-Harris, Flora Parker Bremley, Rockie Lee Parker-Gray, Geneva Parker-Bowden, Elma Parker-Barnes and Amonia Parker-Deloatch. Her brothers, Rufus “Bud” Parker, Jr., Lucius “Hookey” Parker, Milton Parker, John Robert Parker and Ned Parker and her granddaughter, Leila E. Cruz.
. . . A Time To Die
Her character, resilience and strength could still be shown when earlier this year she contracted and overcame Covid-19. She never complained, she just fought and won. Mary Jane Gatling made her final relocation on Saturday, October 31, 2020. She transitioned from this life to eternal rest at Life Care Center of Gwinnett in Lawrenceville, GA. She now resides with the King of Kings.
. . . A Time To Mourn
We believe that Jesus died and rose again and that God will bring to Him those who sleep in Jesus yet still there are those that are left behind to mourn her passing, carry on her legacy and cherish her memory. One son, Archie L. Gatling, Jr. (wife, Lillie) and one daughter, Gwendolyn Diane Gatling, both of Snellville, GA. One grandson, Jason L. Smith of Snellville, GA. One great grandson, Antonio D. Cruz, of Anderson, SC. One great granddaughter, Mariah N. Cruz of Snellville, GA; one aunt, Carrie B. Hines; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
