Mattie Louise (Edwards) Moore

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth

there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall

give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing."

Mattie Louise Edwards-Moore was born on Wednesday, September 10th, 1941, in Margarettsville, North Carolina, to the late George Dallas Edwards and the late Lillie Mae Johnson-Edwards. Her family later made their home in Seaboard, North Carolina, where Mattie would spend the majority of her life. Though she lived for a time in Newark, New Jersey, she eventually returned to Seaboard—the town she lovingly called home—where she remained for the rest of her days.

In 1972, Mattie met the love of her life, James Moore. Their union was formalized in marriage on March 19th, 1988, marking the beginning of a bond that lasted over 50 beautiful years. Their love was deep, unwavering, and filled with joy. Whether traveling, cruising, fishing, shopping, or simply riding together from city to city, their happiness was rooted in being together. They built a warm and welcoming home, raising their daughter Joy “Pootchie” with unconditional love. Though Joy was an only child in the home, she was never alone—Mattie and James maintained an open-door policy, offering food, shelter, and kindness to anyone in need.

Their boundless love extended to the next generation, as they lovingly raised their grandson, Mark, pouring into him a lifetime of affection and care. When Mattie’s beloved sister Minnie passed away, she and James also embraced the responsibility of raising her grandson, Earl, welcoming him into their home and hearts.

Mattie was a devoted member of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Seaboard, where she gave her life to Christ. Her faith was steady and sincere. She served faithfully under the leadership of Reverend John Green and later Reverend Carl Boone. To Mattie, the church wasn’t just a place of worship—it was family. The love and support she gave and received there were a cornerstone of her life.

A gifted seamstress, Mattie used her talents to create beautiful garments and quilts, crafting each piece with love and skill. She also had a keen eye for vintage glassware, collecting dazzling sets in every color imaginable. Her passion for antiques inspired her to open a beloved thrift store that reflected her vibrant spirit—charming, nostalgic, and full of history. It quickly became a favorite local destination where one could always find something special.

Mattie was also a phenomenal cook—known for dishes as delicious as they were beautifully prepared. From savory meals to sweet baked goods, everything she made was crafted with love and joy. Her kitchen was often the heart of family gatherings, filled with laughter, stories, and the aroma of home-cooked perfection.

A fashion icon in her own right, Mattie was known for her impeccable style. Whether dressed casually or elegantly adorned, she always turned heads—especially on Sundays, when she arrived at church in stunning ensembles, complete with her signature bold and beautiful hats.

To know Mattie was to know love, warmth, and grace. She carried a heart big enough for everyone she met—always ready with a kind word, a thoughtful gesture, or an honest piece of advice delivered with compassion. Her presence was calming, her wisdom timeless, and her laughter contagious. She had a gift for making everyone feel seen, valued, and loved.

Mattie found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life: good food, shared laughter, and a home filled with family and friends. She was a steady, guiding light—firm when needed, but always gentle and loving. Her spirit lives on in every life she touched, in every story shared around the table, and in the cherished memories held by all who loved her.

On Saturday, June 21st, 2025, Mattie completed her earthly journey and entered into eternal rest in the presence of her Lord and Savior.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George D. Edwards and Lillie Mae Edwards; her stepmother, Lizzie Edwards; her brothers: Howard, Wallace, Wilson, June, and Budd Edwards; Hookie Mason; Otis, George, and Alonzo Ford; and her sisters: Lucille Mason, Minnie Williams, Ernestine Hayes, Margie Staten, Nannie Banks, Mary, Virginia, Mabel, and Roberta Ford.

Mattie leaves behind a legacy of love and strength cherished by her devoted family: her daughter, Joy (Derek) Pierce of Newark, New Jersey; her grandson, Mark (Chanel) Baxter of Newark, New Jersey; her nephew, Earl Johnson of Newark, New Jersey her great-granddaughters: Najae, N’ahlaya, and Nyla Baxter; her great-grandson: Christian Baker; her sister and best friend: Linda (Grady) Johnson-Marsh; and her in-laws: Luna Del Deloitte-Edwards of Durham, North Carolina, Geraldine Butler-Edwards of Rochester, New York, Lela Mae Williams-Edwards of Buffalo, New York, Lenoria (George) Moore of Baltimore, Maryland; Raymond Moore of Pasadena, California; Ledoria Moore of Greenville, North Carolina; Eulalia Jones-Stiles of Portsmouth, Virginia; Stephanie Moore of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; and Stephen Lee Moore of Baltimore, Maryland.

She also leaves behind her beloved Godchildren: Regina Barrett, LaKeisha Arrington, Ahyana White, Elijah Shearin, and James Robinson; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends.

Mattie was the heart of her family, a pillar of her community, and a gift to all who knew her. Though our hearts ache in her absence, we find comfort in the joy of her memory and the knowledge that she now rests in eternal peace.
