Maxine Dickson Obituary

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart.

And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give.

So don’t be troubled or afraid. ”

~ John 14:27 NLT

Today, we pause to honor and celebrate the life of Maxine Mayo Dickson, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and cherished friend. Born on April 17th in Northampton County, North Carolina, Maxine was a beautiful child entrusted to the care of her loving parents, the late Joseph Mayo, Sr. and Cora Stokes Mayo. Raised in a home rooted in deep faith and love, she carried those values throughout her life, instilling them in her children and reflecting them in every relationship she nurtured.

Maxine received her education through the Northampton County Public School System. A true connoisseur of style, she was well known for her impeccable fashion sense and her ability to always present herself with grace and elegance. Her love extended beyond her family and into her professional life, where she possessed an extraordinary gift for making people feel seen, heard, and cared for—whether through a warm hug, a kind word, or simply offering a listening ear. She brought joy and comfort to all whose lives she touched.

A dedicated and compassionate caregiver, Maxine worked as a Registered Nursing Assistant at Hudsonview Nursing Home in Jersey City, New Jersey. Her tireless commitment to serving others and her generous spirit left a lasting impact on all who knew her. Above all, Maxine was devoted to her family. She cherished every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and loved ones. Her role as “Nana” was one she embraced with immense pride, and the memories she created with her grandchildren will forever be treasured. Her legacy lives on through the love, strength, and countless memories she shared with those closest to her.

Maxine was known for her vibrant personality, quick wit, and remarkable ability to make people laugh. Her joyful spirit and playful sense of humor made her unforgettable. Her favorite saying, “no fool, no fun,” captured her lighthearted nature, and her husband often affectionately referred to her as a comedian. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Mayo, Sr. and Cora Mayo; her special aunt, Mickey; her granddaughter, Brittany; her nephews, Frederick, David, Curtis, Kareem “Shawn,” and Rodney; and her niece, Jacqueline “Jack.”

She leaves to cherish her precious memories her devoted husband, Harry Dickson of Jersey City, New Jersey; her loving children, J. Micheal Drummer, Sr. (Gwen) of Brown Summit, North Carolina, Inger Freeman of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Zenobia Drummer of Mosheim, Tennessee; and her treasured grandchildren, Devin Clanton, Precious Clanton, Miletha Freeman, J. Micheal Drummer, Jr., Morgan Drummer, and Liana Drummer. She also leaves her adored great-grandchildren, Da’Karai Clanton, Jelani Alston, and Karter Drummer.

Maxine is also survived by her beloved siblings, Annie Lee, Janie Porch, Joseph Mayo, Jr. (Rose), James Mayo (Debra), Cora Squire, and Calvin Mayo (Gladys); her brothers-in-law, Larry Dickson (Annie), Marvin Dickson; her sister-in-law, Carrie Sanchez (Tony); and a host of devoted nieces and nephews who affectionately called her “Aunt Max,” along with many other relatives and friends. She will also be fondly remembered by her caring neighbors and friends—Diane, Kalil, who affectionately called her “Grandmom,” Charlie, Katrina, Christine, Shelia, Tim, Angela, and Robin—each of whom held a special place in her heart.
