Melvin Wayne Jones, the beloved son of Virginia Jones and the late William Jones Sr., was born on Wednesday, February 15th, 1967, in Northampton County. He peacefully transitioned to his heavenly eternal home on Wednesday, July 31st, 2024 in the comfort of his earthly home.
Melvin received his education through the Northampton County Public Schools, where he played football, a sport he dearly loved. One of his favorite pastimes was gathering with family to watch his favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys, and reminiscing with his brothers. Melvin was a dedicated and hardworking employee at Murphy Brown, now known as Carroll Foods. His work allowed him to travel across different states, experiencing places a “lil ole country boy” from Jackson, North Carolina, had never seen.
He married Bridget Middleton, and from this union, one child was born. Melvin was a devoted member of the Miracle Tabernacle Church of Deliverance, serving on the Deacon’s board. Though he was a quiet man, his words carried power and anointing. One of his most memorable sermons was titled, “Have you checked your oil lately.” Melvin was known for his powerful dance when the spirit moved him, famously “digging a ditch” during worship.
A man of deep faith, Melvin understood the power of prayer. He led weekly prayer meetings at church and called his mother daily to pray and read scripture. Many might not know, but Melvin was also a talented singer, hitting notes like Paul Beasley. Like his father, he loved quartet music, finding solace in its melodies.
Melvin leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his daughter, Tiffany Jones-Sutton (Floyd) of Clinton, NC; godson, Maurice Knight of Tarboro, NC; fiancée, Ada Godwin of the home; and son-at-heart, Jamario Andrews, also of the home. His mother, Virginia Jones of Jackson, NC, mourns his loss along with his siblings, William Jones Jr. (Joyce) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Anthony Jones of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Christopher Jones of Rocky Mount, NC; and Mary Jones of Roanoke Rapids, NC. He also leaves behind one nephew, Timothy Jones of Tarboro, NC; and five nieces, Lashonda Jones of Philadelphia, PA; Tranetta Lewis of Norfolk, VA; Latajah Jones of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Nicole Holden and family of Warsaw, NC; and Miranda Middleton and family of Warsaw, NC. Melvin is remembered fondly by two great-nieces, Journee Jones of Tarboro, NC, and Jamaya Blythe of Roanoke Rapids, NC; and one great-nephew, Jahmari Jones of Roanoke Rapids, NC. His extended family includes two uncles, Clearance Harris (Gracie) of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and James Mason of Jackson, NC; three aunts, Louise Harris of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Shirley Pernell (Thomas) of Jackson, NC, and Rose Faison of Clinton, NC; sister-in-law Godiva Middleton of Warsaw, NC; god-brother Benny Cherry of Clayton, NC; god-sister, Stefanie Gatling of Roanoke Rapids, NC; and a host of other relatives, friends, and church family.
Melvin’s memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him. His life was a testament to hard work, faith, and the power of family and community.
