Melvin Mason Obituary

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.

Remember Me Our chain will link again.

On Friday, September 5th, 2025, Melvin Mason of Margarettsville, North Carolina, peacefully departed this life to be reunited with his parents, Morris and Martha Ann Robinson Mason, and his beloved siblings: Mark, Matthew, James, Granville, Mary Lynn, Linburg, Richard, Eddie, Elaine (“Tiny”), and Pollie. He now rests in eternal peace, surrounded once again by those who went before him.

Melvin was born on Sunday, March 4th, 1934, in Seaboard, North Carolina, to Morris and Martha Ann Mason. He was educated in the Northampton County Public Schools and from a young age developed a strong work ethic and a deep love for family and community. Early in his career, Melvin began working at a salvage yard in Norfolk, Virginia, stacking crushed junk cars and trucks brought in for cash. He dedicated many years to the salvage business and eventually began purchasing, crushing, and delivering junk vehicles to multiple salvage yards across Virginia and North Carolina. It was during this time that he met his lifelong friend, Bruce Pierce. Together, they worked side by side, collecting vehicles and scrap metal, and forming a bond that lasted decades.

Melvin lived in Portsmouth, Virginia for many years before returning home to the Jackson, North Carolina area, where he eventually settled in Margarettsville. Even after “slowing down,” Melvin remained deeply connected to the work he loved. He continued to tinker with cars and trucks—believing he could fix even the most modern vehicles, despite the challenges of electronic chips and new technology. In his later years, he took up baking as a way to stay busy, and his cakes quickly became a favorite among family, friends, and even the Northampton County Sheriff ’s Department, who often called on him to bake for special occasions.

On Thursday, August 28th, 1997, Melvin was united in holy matrimony with Toni Robinson, blending their families and sharing a deep love that carried them through the years. Melvin leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and quiet strength that will continue to live on through his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Toni Mason, and their devoted children: Lawrence Hawkins, Cornell Hawkins of Portsmouth, Virginia, Theresa “Ree” Riddick (Tony) of Chesapeake, Virginia, Charles Hawkins (Shimeda) of Norfolk, Virginia, Edward Hawkins (Joyce), James Hawkins of Maryland, Regina Richardson (Gary, Sr.) of Clayton, North Carolina, and Patricia Crump (Chond) of Chesapeake, Virginia. He is also survived by twenty grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his children and grandchildren, Melvin is survived by his beloved sister, Virginia Pernell (Willie) of Jackson, North Carolina; sisters-in-law, Mary Gray and Margaret Jordan of Seaboard, North Carolina, Alice Pannell of Jackson, North Carolina, and Joyce Sills of Ahoskie, North Carolina; and his brother-in-law, Webster Robinson of Woodland, North Carolina. He is also remembered with great fondness by two special friends, Collin Dickerson of Georgia and Bruce Pierce of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, as well as a host of extended family and friends who were blessed to know him.

Melvin was known by many names—Melvin, Punch, Grease, Grease Monkey, or Junk Man—all affectionate nicknames that reflected his warm personality, sense of humor, and the love so many felt for him. To know Melvin was to know a man who gave of himself quietly but generously, who worked hard, loved deeply, and lived with dignity.

Though he is no longer with us in body, we do not gather in sorrow, but in gratitude—for a life well-lived, a heart well-loved, and a soul now at peace. Rest well, Melvin. Your journey is complete, and your peace is eternal.
