“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
~ II Timothy 4: 7-8
Mildred Cotton Jordan, daughter of the late Ralph and Bertha Batchelor Cotton, was born on Monday, November 30, 1942 in Seaboard, North Carolina. She was the only girl and last of eleven children.
Mildred’s primary education was obtained through the Northampton County School System. At an early age, she relocated to Newark, New Jersey, while furthering her education through the Essex County/Newark Public School System. She graduated from Southside High School - Class of 1961.
Mildred met and later united in Holy Matrimony to James L. Jordan, Sr. on July 2, 1961. This union was blessed with the birth of one son, James L. Jordan, Jr. For many years, Mildred worked as a Bartender and in the retail industry to help provide for her family.
Early in life, Mildred accepted Christ and became a member of the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Seaboard, North Carolina. While residing in Newark, Mildred and her family united in Christian Fellowship with Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church (FMBC). For many years, she served as the trip coordinator for FMBC. She continued to serve, even after her family relocated to Poconos, Pennsylvania.
In 2005, Mildred and James, Sr. decided to return to their roots in Seaboard, North Carolina, to be closer to her family. She rekindled her membership with Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church on May 29, 2005 and supported the church in any way she could.
She’s in the sun, the wind, the rain, she’s in the air you breathe with every breath you take. She sings a song of hope and cheer, there’s no more pain, no more fear. You’ll see her in the clouds above, hear her whisper words of love, you’ll be together before long, until then listen for her song. Mildred quietly transitioned from this life, while in the comfort of her home. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by: her loving husband, James L. Jordan, Sr.; her beloved son, James L. Jordan, Jr.; ten brothers, Willie, Lloyd, Claude, Lonnie, Raymond, Rudolph, Spencer Ray, Wilbert, Maso and Mabry. May you all rest in peace and have a blessed reunion!
Mildred leaves not to mourn her passing, but to cherish many fond memories: daughter-at-heart, Sherri Lee Dillard of North Plainfield, New Jersey; three grandchildren-at-heart, Destiny McNair, Tiara Jones and Shame Parrish Dillard; sisters-in-law, Clarine Cotton of New York, New York and Martha Cotton of Garysburg, North Carolina; four generations of nieces and nephews; a host of cousins and friends.
