“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace
I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don ’t be troubled or afraid.
~ John 14:27 NLT
Today we pause to pay tribute to the life of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Mildred Crocker Stewart who passed away on Thursday, November 14th , 2024, at the age of 90. She was born on Friday, March 16th, 1934, in Seaboard, North Carolina, to the late Thomas and Althia Jenkins Crocker. Mildred lived a life full of love, dedication, and service to others.
Mildred spent her early years in Northampton County, North Carolina, where she attended public schools and worked alongside her parents and siblings on the family farm. Raised in the deep South, Mildred learned the values of hard work, community, and family, which she carried with her throughout her life.
At a young age, Mildred's dreams extended beyond the borders of Seaboard, and in her pursuit of a better life, she married Cleveland Stewart. Together, they built a life and raised a family in Montclair, New Jersey. Their union of 34 years was a testament to love, resilience, and commitment.
Mildred was a devoted mother to her children: Gregory Stewart, Michael Cleveland Stewart, Jeffery/Jameel Shakir, Thomas Anthony/Karim Shakir, and Sandra Stewart. She was also the cherished mother -in -law of Dorothy Crocker and grandmother to 11 grandchildren, 18 great - grandchildren, and 7 great -great -grandchildren. She deeply loved and took pride in her family, and her legacy lives on through them.
Throughout her career, Mildred worked as a Nursing Aide, dedicating many years to serving the Montclair, New Jersey community at facilities such as Mountainside Hospital, Mont Calm Nursing Home, and Madison Avenue Nursing Home. Her compassionate care touched countless lives, and her work in the healthcare system was a reflection of her kind and nurturing spirit.
Mildred's life was marked by her strong faith, love for her family, and simple pleasures. She found joy in spending time with her children and grandchildren, watching television, dipping snuff, and sipping a cold Pepsi. Her presence was a constant source of warmth and support for all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Cleveland Stewart, her son, Mack Earl Crocker, and her daughter, Sharon Stewart. She is survived by her children: Michael, Jeffery/ Jameel, Thomas/Karim, Sandra, Kadedra Stewart Hunt (Jeffrey), and her daughter -in -law, Dorothy Crocker. She is also survived by her brother, Mr. Elmo (Denise) Crocker of Willingboro, NJ, along with a host of grandchildren, great -grandchildren, great -great -grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
Mildred's family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all those who offered love, support, and prayers during her lifetime. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Rest in peace, Mildred. Your legacy of love and kindness will forever be cherished.
