On June 1st, 1951, in Southampton County, Virginia, God blessed this world with Norris Idrell Odom—affectionately known as “Chuckie Baby.” On September 4th, 2025, at ECU Health North Hospital, she peacefully gained her heavenly rest and entered into eternal glory.
Until her health failed, Norris was a faithful member of Activate Your Faith Outreach Ministry in Pendleton, North Carolina, where she worshiped, fellowshipped, and grew in her walk with the Lord. Her love for God, her family, and her community were the guiding lights of her life.
Born to the late Francis and Doc Bottoms, Norris was educated in the Southampton Public School system. She worked many years at Narricott Fabrics in Boykins, Virginia, later served as a dedicated home health aide, and in her later years, cooked at a restaurant in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, where her meals brought joy to many.
Norris was a woman of many joys and passions. She loved cooking, sewing, playing Mario Kart, and cutting up at the card table. She never missed her chance to play the lottery and had a smile on her face when she was counting her money. Full of humor and life, she was known for her unforgettable sayings and jokes—if you knew her, you loved her. And if you knew her best, you knew she might “cut you today and love you tomorrow.”
Above all else, Norris cherished her family. She raised her children and poured her wisdom into her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, teaching the lessons, values, and traditions they will carry for a lifetime. To her, family wasn’t just by blood—if you were in her presence, you were family. That love reached beyond her home and touched everyone who crossed her path.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eugene “Pops” Odom; her parents, Francis and Doc Bottoms; and her siblings, Roy Bottoms, Howard Bottoms, Ruby Wright, Mae Chappell, Justina Bottoms, Woodrow Bottoms, Rosa Wallace, and Cleon Bottoms.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted children, Michael Rodgers (Patricia) of Pendleton, North Carolina, Nicola Everette (Toby) of Conway, North Carolina, Michelle Vaughan (Torian) of Pendleton, North Carolina, and Joyce Norman (Renaldo) of Lewiston Woodville, North Carolina; her loving sister, Eva Branch; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces nephews, relatives, and friends.
Norris also shared a lifelong bond with her neighborhood sisters—Ann Person, Lois Everette, and Vera Artis—who stood by her side through the years. She held a very special love for the Rogers family, whose care, support, and devotion to her throughout the years will forever be remembered with gratitude.
To know “Chuckie Baby” was to know love, laughter, faith, and realness. She touched every generation she met and left a mark that can never be erased.
As we gather to honor her, we are reminded that whether you were kin by blood, connected by friendship, or tied by love—you were family to her. If you are here today, you were part of her story.
Her story is not one of sadness, but of a life beautifully lived and a family beautifully loved. And just as she always said when leaving, never goodbye but always…
