Otis Lewis Holloman, affectionately known as ‘Butch,’ was born on Thursday, July 24th, 1944, to Lena and Otis H. Holloman in Powellsville, North Carolina. Later, the family moved to Philadelphia, PA, where Butch spent much of his life. He attended grade school in both Powellsville and Philadelphia before being admitted to Virginia Union University (VUU).
Butch had a passion for sports, particularly football, which he played at VUU. His love for racing was evident in his enthusiasm for both car and motorcycle racing. The roar of engines and the excitement of racing made his heart race with joy. He was a frequent attendee at NASCAR races, especially at the Richmond Raceway, thanks to his friend Mike, who ensured he had pit passes to be close to the action. Butch also traveled to Las Vegas for NASCAR events, feeling truly "at home" under the hood of a car. His expertise in automotive matters made him a go-to consultant for friends and family.
Butch's time at VUU was interrupted when he was drafted into the Army, where he served proudly with the 82nd Airborne Division. He often shared thrilling stories of jumping out of planes.
Family was important to Butch, and he made efforts to stay connected. He often spoke about being the last male in his family with the Holloman surname, reflecting on the end of an era. Summers spent in Philadelphia with his cousin Charlotte Holloman at their Aunt Leliah and Uncle Simon's house were fondly remembered.
Butch leaves behind a loving family: Ruth Holloman Metcalf ("Baby Girl") and Dr. Michael Metcalf of Charlotte, North Carolina Jean Holloman of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Mike Metcalf ‘Little Mike’, Jonathan ‘Jonny’ Metcalf, and Grace Holloman of Charlotte, North Carolina; Grace Holloman Davis, his 100-year-old first cousin; Charlotte Holloman and Christina Metcalf of Washington, DC; Leah Metcalf; and Willie Rucker of ‘Miss Me...”. ...A Life Wel Lived, A Life Wel Loved! Fond Memories of ... Remembering ‘Butch’... Canada, his much-loved and admired roommate from Virginia Union University since 1963, a bond that remained strong throughout the years. He also cherished Mattie Wadford, whom he regarded as his second mother, Roman (Nick) Battle, Ryan (Bus) and Ebonie Poole, and Joy Barnes, his devoted companion of 39 years. Butch was blessed with a host of other cousins and friends.
Butch will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
