Pettie Davis Obituary

Hello, My name is Pettie “Ruffin” Davis, some of you call me “Ruffin.” On Friday, April 23, 2021, Jesus quietly entered my room at Brooklyn-Queens Nursing Home in Brooklyn, NY. As I gazed upon the new day, Jesus was right there to take me home. My weary hours and days of pain are over, for I saw the light. As a I affectionately call you “Georgia” there is no need to worry or weep. Don’t sit and think that you didn’t do all you could for me, for I am now in a place of quiet rest, a place of sweet comfort; a place of full release, a place where there is all joy and nothing but peace.

I was born on May 4, 1936, to the late Matthew and Mary Stephenson Davis in Seaboard, NC. I was the youngest of two sisters and one brother born into this Christian rearing family. At an early age, I accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior and joined the Bethlehem Baptist Church, Seaboard, North Carolina.

On June 30, 1962, I married my high school sweetheart, Georgia Carroll.

I was preceded in death, by my parents, Matthew, and Mary Stephenson Davis, one brother Anderson Davis, and my two sisters, Sarah D. Long and Mary M. Cotton.

Because of having to work on the farm most of my young adult years, I couldn’t complete school. But, as life went on, in 1957, I became employed with the U.S. Manufacturing Mailboxes where I made mailboxes. Knowing I wanted to do something different, in 1958 when I moved to Manhattan, New York, I was employed with the Auto Parts Store for a brief time. But somehow, I still wasn’t satisfied. In 1964, when I moved to Brooklyn, New York, I found my dream job working with the New York City Transit until I retired on May 31, 1986. After which, I spent a lot of time traveling the country and spending quality time with family and friends.

On December 5, 1999, I became a member of Saint Anthony Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. McCullum, I was a dedicated and faithful member of the Men’s Ministry. Being a part of an awesome ministry, I became a father figure to so many whom I will truly miss.

Now as I take my final flight, I will forever cherish the final moments shared with the love of my life, my wife of 58 years, Georgia Davis of Brooklyn, NY; one sister-in-law, Garnett Odom of Jackson, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and so many friends.

So, as I say farewell to you all, just know from my heart to yours, “That I loved you all.”
