Phyllis Ann Horton Manley

      Phyllis Ann Horton Manley, born on Wednesday, September 13th, 1950, in Siler City, North Carolina, to the late Tyree Horton and Gertrude Lejoyce Headen Horton, was the cherished eldest among five siblings.

      Having been baptized at an early age, Phyllis devoted her life to serving the Lord. For several years, she made her home in Leesburg, Virginia, alongside her beloved husband, James 'Jim' Manley, and was an active member of the First Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Leesburg.

      Phyllis earned the love and respect of many in the Loudoun County area over the years. As one of the pioneering African American women, she achieved the remarkable feat of becoming a driver instructor with Greyhound Bus Lines. Her professional journey was marked by dedication and resilience, and she concluded her illustrious career by retiring from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. For an impressive 21 years, Phyllis served with distinction as a Mobile Lounge Operator at Dulles Airport, leaving an indelible mark on the transportation industry.

      Despite leaving her North Carolina roots, Phyllis remained steadfast in generously supporting her family throughout the years.

      Beyond her work, Phyllis indulged in several hobbies she held dear. Traveling, savoring good food, and dancing were her top three favorites. Those who had the pleasure of meeting her were captivated by her infectious smile and witty personality. Phyllis will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

      On Wednesday, December 27th, 2023, Phyllis answered God's call to eternal rest while in the serenity of her home, surrounded by her loving family. In addition to her beloved parents, she was predeceased by her two brothers, Newby Horton and Keith Horton.

      Her life, marked by loving deeds and perpetual thoughtfulness for others' special needs, will be forever cherished. Her sweet spirit, caring heart, and enduring generosity will be fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched. Those who remain, grappling with the bitter pain of death, find solace in the promise made by God to wipe away all tears from our eyes.

      To cherish her memory, Phyllis leaves behind:  her husband, James ‘Jim’ Manley of the home; sister, Hope Horton Welsh; brother, Byron Horton, both of Siler City, North Carolina; uncles, James Horton (Marie) of Siler City, North Carolina and Jackie Horton (Sedalia) of Greensboro, North Carolina; a dear cousin and confidant, Marsha Newby of Durham, North Carolina; best friend, Doreen Lucas (Donald), neighbor and caregiver.

      Additionally, Phyllis is survived by: her brother-in-law and sisters-in-law: Robert Faison, Jr. (Mildred) and  Josephine A. ‘Net’ Faison, all of Jackson, North Carolina; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends near and far.

At Phyllis’s request, in lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the local American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 4110, Glen Allen, VA 23058 in Phyllis’s name.
