Roy McCoy Daye

Roy McCoy Daye was born on Monday, March 3rd, 1941, in Pendleton, North Carolina, to Lee Burden Daye, Sr. and Bertha Deloatch Daye.

Roy was nurtured in a Christian household, instilled with Godly principles by his father, who was a preacher. He embraced this faith at an early age, becoming a member of Zoar Missionary Baptist Church in Pendleton, North Carolina.

Roy received his education in the Northampton County Public School System, graduating from Willis Hare School in 1961. During his high school years, he excelled in baseball, gaining recognition as one of the finest pitchers in the area. After graduation, Roy pursued higher education at Shaw University, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in physical education in 1965. He dedicated his early career to teaching in Wake, Northampton, and Halifax counties before venturing into the healthcare industry, first in Suffolk, Virginia, and later in New Jersey, where he joined his sister. After retirement, he settled in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and, in recent months, he moved to Pendleton, North Carolina, residing with his niece, Bertha "Christine" Denson, as his health declined.

Roy was a kind and gentle soul, always eager to share memories, offer advice, and provide words of encouragement on political and religious matters. He remained engaged with current affairs, regularly tuning into the news and PBS. Roy was a constant presence at family gatherings, contributing to the warmth and completeness of these occasions.

Roy peacefully answered God's call on Wednesday, January 24th, 2024, from the comfort of his home. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Bertha, as well as his brothers, Thomas, Lonnie, Mahlon, Bahlon and Lee Burden Jr., and sisters, Jeanette Dickerson, Mable Daye, Missie Brewer and Bettie Lou Jordan.

Left to cherish his memories are his two sons, Wilbur Darryl Daye of Nashville, North Carolina, and Patrick Daye of Suffolk, Virginia. He is also survived by one sister, Gracie Daye Bynum of Pendleton, North Carolina, and one brother, Alvin Daye of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Additionally, Roy leaves behind a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.
