For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy
to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
~Romans 8: 18
Shirley Mae Lassiter Boone, lovingly known as “Shirley Mae” by family and friends, was born on Friday, May 7th, 1954, in Seaboard, North Carolina, to the late George and Virginia (Virgie) Lassiter. The youngest of five children, Shirley brought warmth, laughter, and love into the lives of all who knew her.
At an early age, Shirley accepted Christ as her Savior and began her spiritual journey at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Seaboard. Throughout her life, she remained a woman of deep faith, purpose, and grace. She was widely admired for her radiant smile, unique sense of fashion, and a personal style that was entirely her own.
Following in the footsteps of her mother, Shirley developed a love for poetry—both writing and reciting heartfelt verses. She found joy in serving others, cherishing time spent with her family and friends. Her capacity to love was boundless, and those blessed to know her carry lasting imprints of her affection and spirit.
Shirley was educated in the Northampton County School System and went on to attend North Carolina Central University in Durham. In 1988, she relocated to southern Maryland, where she dedicated many years to federal government service before pursuing her calling as a substance abuse and mental health counselor. She later joined St. Matthew Pentecostal Church, where she became a beloved pillar of the congregation, serving faithfully until her health no longer allowed.
On Wednesday, May 28th, 2025, Shirley Mae Lassiter peacefully transitioned from this life at her residence, answering her final call to eternal rest. Her earthly journey complete, her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by two siblings—her sister Carolyn and brother Bennie—as well as her loyal four-legged companion, Buddy.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories in the hearts of her family: her two children, Tyreese Townsend (Cassandra) of Newberg, Maryland, and Virginia Boone of California, Maryland; one sister, Delois Locust of Gretna, Virginia; one brother, George Jr. (Linda) of Smithfield, Virginia; her husband, Alphonso Lewis Boone of Suffolk, Virginia; and two granddaughters, Camile and KaLynn Townsend. She also leaves two spiritually adopted daughters, Adrina Sabb Allen (Tony) of Mechanicsville, Maryland, and Felicia Cheatham (James) of Hollywood, Maryland; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Shirley Mae’s life was a testament to faith, service, love, and resilience. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
