Shirley Keeling Obituary

Shirley Lamb Keeling, daughter of the late James and Hazel Claud Lamb, was born on Friday, February 11th, 1938, in Southampton County, Virginia. She peacefully transitioned to eternal rest on Monday, June 10th, 2024, while in the care of Bon Secours - Southampton Medical Center in Franklin, Virginia.

Shirley attended Norfolk Catholic High School in Norfolk, Virginia, and dedicated 26 years of her life to serving at Sherwood Forest Elementary School before retiring. A devoted member of Zion Light Church of Christ Disciples in Norfolk, she served on the Mother’s Board, sang in the Senior Choir, and participated in the Pastor’s Aid, embodying the essence of "A Virtuous Woman." Shirley was also a proud and active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliated.

As the matriarch of her family, Shirley was deeply respected and admired. Her values and principles have left a lasting impact on all who knew her. Her love for her family was profound, and she left them with these parting words: “No time to cry, don’t shed a tear, I am with God, in spirit I am here. I kept the faith, my spirit is light, I am at peace now, I fought the good fight... Continue loving each other and having family gatherings.”

On her final day, Shirley found solace in the hymn, “When peace like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll, whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul.” Embracing this sentiment, she crossed the great divide and entered eternal rest, having sown her seeds well and completed her earthly service. She now experiences the triumph of eternal life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Keeling.

Cherished memories will forever remain in the hearts of her sons: Marquette, Rojas, and Savaje Keeling; daughters, Hazel Keeling-Bloomfield and Elvira Vita Keeling-Archer; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends.

We love and miss you, Shirley. May you rest in peace.
