“All my life YOU have been faithful. All my life YOU have been so, so good.
With every breath that I am able, I will sing of the goodness of God.”
Shirley Jean Williams Walton was born on Wednesday, June 12th, 1940, in Margarettsville to the late James Henry Deloatch and Mary Lucy Williams. She was lovingly raised by her grandparents, Nannie and Jessie Pearson. At an early age, Shirley was baptized and became a devoted member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Margarettsville, North Carolina. She attended Gumberry High School in Northampton County, where she met the love of her life, the late Bennette Walton Sr. Their loving union was blessed with four children: Evangeline, Robin, Kevin, and Bennette Jr.
Shirley and her husband later relocated to New York City, where she dedicated her early years to raising their children. Once her youngest child entered school, she began her first career at E.J. Korvette. Determined to further her education and career, she attended Staten Island Community College while working as a School Safety Officer for the Staten Island Board of Education. Through hard work and dedication, Shirley advanced to the position of supervisor and ultimately retired as a Level 3 School Safety Agent with the New York City Police Department after thirty years of faithful service.
Shirley was known as a true fashion queen who loved dancing, traveling, spending time with family, and trying her luck at the casinos. She also found joy in reading her Bible and helping others whenever she could. Her warmth, strength, and vibrant spirit touched the lives of all who knew her.
On Thursday, May 7th, 2026, Shirley entered eternal rest and reunited with her parents, grandparents, Uncle James Hodge Pearson, Aunt Dorothy “Big Sister” Williams, and a host of loved ones who preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories her children: Evangeline “Mickey” (Jeffrey) Lee, Robin (Floyd) Rimpson, Kevin (Sheila) Walton, and Bennette (Shockey) Walton Jr.; her beloved grandchildren, Leah Thompson, Bennette Walton III, Shamara Walton Johnson, Ashley Burton, Wesley F. Rimpson, Demetric L. Walton, Ariel R. Rimpson, Jeffrey Lee, and Sad’e Lee; fourteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also lovingly remembered by her devoted partner, Ronald Bryant, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
