Sylvia Wilkins Obituary

“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.”

~ Psalm 121:1-2

Sylvia Robinson Wilkins, the beloved daughter of Emily Lee Stewart Robinson and the late Hilton Peebles, was born on August 15th, 1959, in Northampton County, North Carolina. She peacefully departed this life on Monday, October 21st, 2024, surrounded by the warmth of her home in Jackson, North Carolina.

Sylvia accepted Christ at a young age, embracing a faith that guided her life, and she was baptized in her early years. She pursued her education through Northampton County Public Schools before embarking on a career that included work with JP Stevens and Wonder Bread Inc.

Known for her radiant spirit, Sylvia was a woman with a heart of gold, and her beauty shone as much through her kind soul as her outward smile. Her laughter was a light that filled any room, and her warmth was felt by all who knew her. Generous to a fault, Sylvia never hesitated to help those in need, especially her children and grandchildren, and was known to give the clothes off her back to others. However, beneath her soft demeanor was a strong voice and steadfast opinions, and Sylvia never hesitated to “tell it like it is.” She could be counted on to listen, day or night, and her support was a constant source of strength for her loved ones. In her free time, Sylvia cherished moments spent with family, often enjoying movies and music videos. A lover of old-school music, she took pleasure in road trips with her husband, Robert, family, and friends. She also enjoyed playing cards, bingo, and trips to the casino.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her father, Hilton Peebles; grandsons, Keyuon Garner and Latrell Stephenson; brothers, Earl Dade and Michael Robinson; sisters, Maxine Stewart and Eloise Stewart Vinson; niece, Sequita Moore; and nephews, Anthony Hunter Moore and Robert Lee Miller, III.

Sylvia leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with her husband, Robert L. Wilkins, Jr., of Jackson, North Carolina; her children, Forkeshia Person of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Lanita Robinson of Gaston, North Carolina, Henry Domayne Stephenson of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Shanista Stephenson of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and Sheketia Stephenson of Seaboard, North Carolina; her seventeen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also remembered by her children at heart, Tracy Wilkins of Jackson, North Carolina; Thomas R. Wilkins of Raleigh, North Carolina; Darrell Wilkins (Kimesa) of Knightdale, North Carolina; Shantria W. Henry (Justin) of Raleigh, North Carolina; and Asia Wilkins of Durham, North Carolina. Her mother, Emily Lee Stewart Robinson of Jackson, North Carolina; sisters, Ernestine Williams of Landover, Maryland; Sandra Miller of Forestville, Maryland; and Dianna Robinson of Seaboard, North Carolina; and her special cousin, Marion Stewart of Boston, Massachusetts, whom she loved as a sister, mourn her deeply. Sylvia also leaves her sisters-in-law, Gladys Wilkins of Jackson, North Carolina; Edna Moody of Henrico, North Carolina; and Barbara Lewis (Sherman) of Queens, New York, along with a wide circle of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.

Sylvia’s light touched everyone she met, and her kindness, love, and resilience will live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.
