Theodore Stephenson Obituary

The Life & Legacy of a Great Man...

There’s a very special garden, Where the trees of memory grow

Nurtured by the kindness And concern that good friends show.

The roots are cherished memories Of good times in the past

The branches tender promises ,That souls endure and last.

It’s a place of peace and beauty, Where bright new hopes can start

It’s memory’s lovely garden, That soothes the hurting heart.

A Gift of God - Early Years

Theodore Roosevelt Stephenson, born on September 2nd, 1938, in Severn, North Carolina, was the beloved eighth child of McKinley Sr. and Addie Stephenson. Named “Theodore,” meaning “a gift of God,” he truly lived up to this meaning. Growing up in a family of strong values, he attended Meherrin Elementary and later graduated from Willie Hare High School. Even as a student, Theodore worked diligently on the family farm, a commitment that shaped his character. On February 14th, 1959, he married the love of his life, Mae Lois Martin, beginning a partnership that would span 65 beautiful years.

The Joyful Years in New Jersey

In 1960, Theodore and Mae Lois moved to Montclair, New Jersey, where Theodore brought his hardworking spirit. Known for his remarkable work ethic, he took on various roles before finding his place with the North Caldwell road and water department, eventually serving as a supervisor until his retirement. His commitment to the community extended beyond work—Theodore was also the proud coach of the Montclair Green Caps Softball team, where his “tough love” approach made him a respected mentor. Deeply grounded in faith, he joined Bright Hope Baptist Church in Montclair, serving as a doorkeeper and Trustee.

Returning Home – A Life of Service

In 1994, Theodore returned home to Seaboard, North Carolina, where he could pursue his passions and reconnect with his roots. Rejoining First Baptist Church in Severn, he was an active member, singing in the choir, joining the Severn Male Chorus, and serving as a Deacon. Theodore found joy in planting a garden each season, sharing the harvest with family and friends. A devoted Mets fan, he would eagerly discuss the team with anyone willing to listen. Theodore’s pride in his appearance, his steadfast faith, and his love for his family were unmistakable parts of his character.

Cherished Memories & Everlasting Peace

On Wednesday, October 23, 2024, surrounded by the love of his life, Mae Lois, in the peace of their home, Theodore was lifted into eternal rest. His life was one of humility, strength, and steadfast belief in God, often sharing his conviction, “It’s in God’s hands.” Theodore has joined those he loved who passed before him: his parents McKinley Sr. and Addie; siblings Edward, McKinley Jr., Robert, Elizabeth, Lois, and Maude; grandson Deun’te; nieces Clementine, Pecola, and Beaulah; and nephews Arthur, Willie Joe, Alfred, Rudolph, Jimmy and Clifton.

A Legacy of Love

Theodore leaves behind a family that was his pride and joy: his devoted wife of 65 years, Mae Lois Stephenson; his children Pamela (Ronald) Lewis of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Barbara (Farris) Hamm of Petersburg, Virginia, and Anthony Stephenson of Seaboard, North Carolina; his grandchildren Tynica (Logan) Lewis in South Korea, Elisha Stephenson of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Latissa Hamm of Richmond, Virginia, Tiara Shaw of Greensboro, North Carolina; Rashaun Walker of Seaboard, North Carolina, Stephon Ashe and Denzel Ashe, both of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and Eric Richardson of Petersburg, Virginia; thirteen great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Hilda West of Norfolk, Virgina, and Floyd Stephenson of Courtland, Virginia. He is also survived by three godsons, James Jordan Jr., Arron Harris, and George Hoggard; special nephew, Garland (Gloria) Stephenson and cherished friends, James Balmer, James Coates, and Arron Seabron. His extended family, including many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends, will forever hold his memory close.

Theodore Stephenson’s legacy of love, faith, and resilience will remain with us as a guiding light, strengthening our family circle and inspiring us to cherish one another as he did.
