Thomas Barnes Obituary

With love and cherished memories, we celebrate the life and homegoing of our beloved Thomas Downing Barnes of Seaboard, NC, who peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, January 29th, 2025, at ECU Hospital in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. His passing follows a year of great challenges, after suffering two strokes on February 26th, 2024, which led to months of hospitalization and rehabilitation. A week before his 67th birthday, he contracted Flu A while in the hospital, and despite his resilience and strong will to recover, complications from the flu and pneumonia ultimately took him home to be with the Lord.

Thomas was born on January 24th, 1958, the son of the late William Barnes and Carrie Bernice Shoulders Barnes. His journey began in the warmth of his mother’s home, where he was delivered by a midwife in Seaboard, North Carolina. Raised in Northampton County, Thomas graduated from Gumberry High School before answering the call to serve his country.

Enlisting in the U.S. Army, Thomas dedicated over a decade of his life to military service. His time in the Army took him to various places, from the diverse landscapes of California and Kansas to the tropical beauty of O’ahu, Hawaii, where he formed lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories. Among his proudest accomplishments was completing Drill Sergeant School, earning his Drill Sergeant hat, and exemplifying discipline, dedication, and leadership. His military journey also took him to Korea, where he spent a year stationed, and created more lasting bonds. Upon returning stateside, Thomas resided in Newport News, Virginia, before eventually making his way back to North Carolina after his honorable military service.

Thomas was a man of thoughtfulness, generosity, and infectious energy. He was known for leaving an impression wherever he went, with a radiant smile that could brighten any room. Though he had a tough exterior, his heart was kind and open, always ready to help others. His laughter and exuberant spirit were contagious, and he loved dancing, watching his favorite action, karate, and western movies, and sharing jokes and laughter with his friends.

After returning home, Thomas worked at the Seaboard Cotton Gin and later spent the remainder of his career at West Fraser, where he worked diligently until medical issues stemming from his military service led to his retirement.

Joy Lynn Lebron-Ayala (Luis) of Leesville, Louisiana, gifted Thomas the blessing of children to father and nurture. His legacy continues through his children, who he deeply loved and cherished: Mia Turro of Gaston, North Carolina; Tomas Barnes of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; and Noelle Young (Alexander) of Fort Gregg-Adams, Virginia. His love for them was profound, and they carry his strength, kindness, and spirit.

As a proud grandfather, Thomas found endless joy in his grandchildren: Sir’Nikolas Turro, Noriana & De’Miya Upshaw, Azariah Young, and Zylah Barnes. He also looked forward to the arrival of his sixth grandchild, who is lovingly carried by Noelle—a new life that will forever carry his legacy.

Thomas is also survived by his sisters: Carrie Barnes of Seaboard, North Carolina; Mamie Banks of Jackson, North Carolina; and Josephine Jones of Union, North Carolina. His brothers: William McKinley Barnes of Norfolk, Virginia; John Barnes (Vivian), Jesse Barnes (Elsie) of Seaboard, North Carolina; Sam Barnes (Rethella) of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; Perry Barnes of Jackson, North Carolina; Jerry Barnes of Pleasant Hill, North Carolina; and Terry Barnes of Tacoma, Washington.

In addition to his immediate family, Thomas leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. His legacy is one that will live on in the countless lives he touched, through his generosity, humor, and undying love.

Rest in love, Thomas. You will always be missed, but your light will never fade. Acts 24:15 reminds us of the hope we share: “There is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.” You are forever in our hearts.
