“If I can help somebody as I travel along, If I can help somebody in a word or a song
If I can help somebody from doing wrong, No, my living shall not be in vain”
Tosca Viola Townes, affectionately known as TT, Ms. TT, Aunt TT, Emily, and Tosca Renea, peacefully passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication. Born on Thursday, October 31st, 1957, she was a proud 1976 graduate of Gumberry High School, where she built lifelong friendships. Tosca went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education from North Carolina A&T State University in 1980, and later received her Master’s degree from North Carolina Central University.
Tosca’s career was a testament to her love for education and her unwavering commitment to children. She spent many years as a beloved teacher at Northampton County Schools, inspiring students with her heart for teaching. Additionally, Tosca served as an Assistant Principal in Franklin, North Carolina, where she made a lasting impact. After retiring from teaching, she continued to serve her community through various volunteer roles. She was an active member of the Garysburg Volunteer Fire Department and First Responders, where she served as Secretary. Tosca was also involved with the Garysburg Goodwill Senior Citizen Club, Roanoke Salem Missionary Baptist Church as a Youth Advisor, and the Northampton County Retired Teachers Association.
Tosca’s passion for service extended beyond education. She was deeply involved in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, as well as the Enfield Roanoke Rapids Chapter of the sorority. A proud alumna of North Carolina A&T State University, Tosca also supported the Lucy F. Dunn Gleaners Branch #91. She was a regular volunteer with local food banks, continuing her work in the community after retirement. Tosca found joy in assisting others, often transporting friends to doctors’ appointments, shopping for medicines and groceries, and providing rides to church.
Tosca’s greatest joy was working with children. She taught from the heart, always ensuring that every child learned and thrived. To the children in her community, she was lovingly known as “Aunt TT.” Her compassion for others extended to her thoughtful visits to the sick and shut-in, offering condolences and comfort to grieving families.
In her spare time, Tosca enjoyed completing crossword and word search puzzles, playing slot machines, and tending to her beloved plants and flowers. Her family and friends fondly remember her caring nature, her love of life, and her unwavering dedication to making her community a better place.
Tosca was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Gladys Arnetta Townes, and her sister, Violent Denise. She leaves to cherish her memory, one niece, Kenisha Smith of Baltimore, Maryland; her sisters-at-heart, Cynthia Kidd, Sharonda Kidd, Cathy Kidd, Carolyn Kidd, Sylvia Kidd, Alicia Jefferies, Iris Williams, Doris Bowman, and Geraldine Langford; as well as her classmates from the Gumberry High School Class of 1976. She kept in close contact with her cousins Lizzie Johnson of Baltimore, Maryland, Sandra Bryant (Vernon) of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and Charlotte Garner of Garysburg, North Carolina. Tosca’s special riding companion, Mrs. Barbara Kee, and her dear friend, Brent Haynie of Baltimore, Maryland, along with a host of cousins, relatives, and friends, will forever hold her memory dear.
Tosca’s life was a testament to love, service, and joy. She touched countless lives, and her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
