Trustee Joseph Lee Douglas

Today, we pause to honor and celebrate the life of Joseph Lee Douglas, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. His warmth, charisma, and radiant smile left an unforgettable impression on all who had the joy of knowing him. Born on Thursday, October 27th, 1955, in Northampton County, North Carolina, Joseph was a precious gift entrusted to the loving care of his parents, Willie Joe Douglas and Lucille Copeland Douglas. Reared in a home grounded in faith, love, honesty, respect, and humor, Joseph carried these values with him throughout his life. He received his education through the public schools of Northampton County, where he was both loved and admired by his peers.

With a larger-than-life personality, Joseph had the rare gift of making others feel valued and deeply loved. His vibrant spirit, encouraging words, and ability to light up any room made him unforgettable. He was kind, dependable, gentle, loving, and selfless qualities he exhibited even as he bore his burdens with quiet strength. Brave and faithful to the end, Joseph never wavered in his trust in God!

Early in life, Joseph accepted Christ and was baptized at Saint John Missionary Baptist Church. Later, he rededicated his life to Christ and joined Temple Emanuel Church in Weldon, North Carolina, where he served faithfully under the leadership of Bishop Curtis Ransom as a Trustee. Joseph and his pastor shared a special bond, built on mutual respect and a shared vision for ministry. Bishop Ransom was more than a spiritual leader he was a trusted confidant, whose powerful prayers and visits to Joseph’s home, hospital, and rehabilitation center brought immense comfort and peace.

Professionally, Joseph retired from the textile industry after many dedicated years with J.P. Stevens, and later worked part-time with Barnes Sales, where his personable nature made a lasting impact on customers and colleagues alike. In his free time, Joseph found joy in watching westerns, listening to gospel music, and reading his Bible. His favorite song, “Ride Out the Storm,” became a personal anthem one he lived out with dignity and grace, never complaining, always trusting God.

On Tuesday, September 16th, 2025, in the serenity of his home and surrounded by his loving family, Joseph peacefully answered God’s call to eternal rest. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Mary Price, Howard Douglas, Hazel Hagan, Emma Banks, Anna Bell Copeland, Willie Copeland, Marion Douglas, and Linberg Douglas.

Though we are struck by the pain of loss, we are comforted by the promise of God that He will wipe all tears from our eyes. Joseph’s memory will be cherished by his devoted wife, Zell Story of Garysburg, North Carolina; his caring children: Laquita Gary (Christopher) of Halifax, North Carolina, Tasha Moses of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Joseph Lamont Douglas of Chesapeake, Virginia; and his children-at-heart, Ashley and Terry Garner of Garysburg, North Carolina. He also leaves behind fifteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; siblings: Louise Epps (Arthur) and Ray Douglas (Mae Belle), both of Garysburg, North Carolina, Robert Douglas (Gloria) of Jackson, North Carolina, Maggie Douglas of Weldon, North Carolina, Dozine Douglas Robinson of Cleveland, Ohio, Rozetta Douglas, Bishop Carlton Davis (Gloria) of Weldon, North Carolina, and Joyce Boone (Alvin) of Louisville, Kentucky, one uncle, Collin Williams of Weldon, North Carolina; father- and mother-in-law, James and Katie Trice of Weldon, North Carolina; and a host of beloved sisters- and brothers-in-law: Susie Evans (Ricky), Claiborne Banks, Gloria Turner (John), Barbara Parker (Jerome), Tammy Braxton (Antwain), Lizzie Trice, Clarice Ransome, Robert Story (Nicole), James Story, Shane Story, and Ronnie Story. He will also be dearly missed by a multitude of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Our family is a circle of strength and love. With every birth and every union, the circle grows, and with every trial faced together, it grows stronger. Joseph’s legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
