Vera Virginia Carter Walters was called home in the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 5th, 2024. She transitioned peacefully in her sleep, resting in the arms of the Lord.
Vera was born on Monday, June 25th, 1928, in Pendleton, North Carolina. She was the youngest daughter among seven children of the late Ulysses Carter and Felix Stephenson Carter. Vera was a loving sister, aunt, and cousin, a loyal and charitable friend, and a dedicated servant of the Lord. At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at Zoar Missionary Baptist Church in Pendleton, North Carolina. She was a devoted member of the church’s Senior Choir, a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, and a member of the Senior Citizen Activities committee.
Vera attended Galatia Colored Elementary School and graduated from Willis Hare High School in May 1949. She earned a BS Degree in Education from Winston-Salem State University in 1954, becoming the first descendant of her grandfather, Andrew William Carter, to achieve this educational milestone. She began her teaching career in Beaufort County Schools, SC, where one of her notable students was Joe Frazier, the future heavyweight boxing champion of the world. Vera continued her career in Northampton County Public Schools, NC, teaching at Willis Hare High and Elementary Schools during the implementation of school desegregation. She also taught in Lenoir County Public Schools, Onslow County School District, and New Castle County Public Schools, DE, before returning to Northampton County, where she taught at Coates and Meherrin Elementary Schools until her retirement in July 1985.
Vera was deeply committed to serving others and was a Certified Hospice Care volunteer trained by University Health Systems. She was a member of the Interstate Church Musicians and Choir Guild, and a prominent voice in the local professional gospel singing group, “The Gatherettes.” She served on the Northampton County Parent Involvement Council, the National Association of University Women, and the Northampton County Teachers Association. Vera was also a proud and active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
Our precious memories of Vera include hearing her voice echoing around the house, singing songs by her favorite artists such as The Impressions, Ray Charles, and The Fifth Dimension, or reciting poems like Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven,” “Trees” by Joyce Kilmer, and selected works by Helen Steiner Rice. These moments gave her joy and continue to bring warmth and richness to our memories of her.
Vera was predeceased by her parents, Ulysses and Felix Carter, her brothers Joseph, Hinton, and Lucius Carter, her sisters Pearlie McIntosh and Amy Carter, and her ex-husband Leroy Walters. She leaves to cherish her memory one brother, Willie Gary Carter of Washington, DC, a nephew, Jessie McIntosh of Chesapeake, Virginia, for whom she provided primary guardianship during most of his childhood, and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and special friends.
