I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
~ II Timothy 4:7-8
Verlie Mae Long, daughter of Audrey Mae Bottoms and the late Columbus Bottoms, was born on Friday, January 7, 1949 in Pendleton (Northampton County), North Carolina.
Verlie was educated in the Northampton County Public School System. Early in life, she met and was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Columbus ‘Cut’ Long. This union was blessed with three sons. As a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, niece, aunt and friend, Verlie loved her family dearly and will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.
She’s in the sun, the wind, the rain, she’s in the air you breathe with every breath you take. She sings a song of hope and cheer, there’s no more pain, no more fear. You’ll see her in the clouds above, hear her whisper words of love, you’ll be together before long, until then listen for her song. On Sunday, August 20, 2023, while in the care of ECU Health North Hospital, Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Verlie quietly transitioned from this earthly life and entered into the presence of our Lord. In addition to her father, Columbus Bottoms and husband, Columbus Long, Verlie was preceded in death by four sisters, Lois, Mozell, Calonia and Mary Ann; niece, Sierra; nephew, Darren and a host of other loving relatives who await this blessed reunion.
Cherished memories will forever remain in the hearts of: her loving mother, Audrey Mae Bottoms of Pendleton, North Carolina; three sons, Allton Lee Long of Chesapeake, Virginia, Curtis Darnell Long (Avis) of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Desmond Trent Long (Morzelia) of Norfolk, Virginia; her grandchildren, Brittney, Curtis, Travis, Ketia, Denita, Desmond Jr. and Keymond; two great-grandchildren, Trevon and Javion; one sister, Ernestine Rogers (Willie) and one brother, Stafford Bottoms both of Pendleton, North Carolina; two aunts, Ella Mae Gatling of Pendleton, North Carolina and Gracie Mae Gatling of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
