Will Ester Newsome Obituary

“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,

knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance;

for you serve the Lord Christ.”

~ Colossians 3:23-24

WILL ESTER NEWSOME was born on May 9th, 1950, in Columbus, Mississippi, to the late Eddie James Lockett and Ethyl Lee Watts. At the age of nine, she moved to Washington, D.C., to live with her aunt. It was there that she met and later married her junior high school sweetheart. From that union, they were blessed with six children. In pursuit of a better life, the family relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Affectionately known as Ester, she was a strong-willed and private woman who deeply loved her family. She was employed by Procacci Brothers, where she worked faithfully until her retirement. Ester was baptized at an early age at Israel Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., and later became a devoted member of Shalom Baptist Church in Philadelphia. She attended regularly until her health no longer allowed, after which she continued to worship by watching services online.

Ester took great pride in her family and selflessly raised her grandson, Darien Newsome, along with her two great-grandchildren, Sharam and Tamir Newsome. Her love and guidance left a lasting impact on those she cared for.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ethyl Lee Watts; her father, Eddie James Lockett; one sister, Rose Montgomery; her brothers, Eddie, Joseph, Billy, and David Lockett; and her beloved grandson, Darien Newsome.

Ester leaves to cherish her memory: her loving husband of 56 years, Clarence Newsome; her six children, Lamonte Newsome, Divina Lyles, Clarence Newsome Jr., Cynthia Ragin, Anthony Newsome, and Kimberly Newsome; her brother, Larry Lockett; two sisters-in-law, Vera Lockett and Jewel Lockett; twenty-three grandchildren; thirty-five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends who will remember her with love and gratitude.
