Zachary Coleman Obituary

“There’s an open gate at the end of the road, Through which each must go alone,

And there is a light we cannot see. Our Father claims His Own”

Zachary Bowser Coleman, affectionately known as “Zac,” answered the Master’s call and entered into eternal rest on Sunday, April 13th, 2025, at the age of 75. He was the fifth of eight children born to the late John Peele and Cleo Coleman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three beloved sisters: Nonie Mae Lee, Carolyn Coleman, and Charlotte Cross.

Zac was educated in the Northampton County Public School System and proudly graduated from Gumberry High School in 1969. Even before receiving his diploma, Zac took on responsibility and leadership, driving school bus #93 for three years. He was known for keeping the bus as spotless as his own car—always neat, tidy, and cared for with pride.

After graduation, Zac began his working career at the Talon Zipper Factory in Woodland, North Carolina, where he was employed for more than a decade. When the factory closed, he transitioned to driving 18-wheelers for a fuel company. Though not formally trained, Zac’s determination and willingness to learn from experienced friends allowed him to master the craft of operating large rigs. Eventually, he owned his own truck and route, navigating the roads with confidence and skill.

In 1981, Zac found his true calling in public service as a Correctional Officer at Odom Prison. For over 30 years, he served with dedication and integrity until his retirement in 2004. His time in the correctional system reflected his steady character and quiet strength. Later in life, Zac accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and became a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.

Zac was a man of many passions. He loved hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. He had a deep appreciation for music, especially the soulful sounds of the 1960s and ’70s. James Brown and Jerry Butler held special places in his heart and playlists. One of Zac’s most endearing qualities was his gift for storytelling—his tales, whether drawn from work, fishing trips, or everyday life, were delivered with charm, humor, and vivid detail. He could captivate a room and have everyone laughing in no time. No one could tell a story quite like Zac.

He leaves to cherish his memory four devoted brothers: John G. Coleman (Jackie) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Augustus Coleman of Norfolk, Virginia; Marshal C. Coleman (Effie) of Elizabeth City, North Carolina; and Donald E. Coleman of Baltimore, Maryland. He also leaves behind a nephew who was like a son, Kevin D. Cross (Geshia) of Zebulon, North Carolina; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends.

Zac lived a full life marked by hard work, humility, humor, and heart. His warmth, wisdom, and wit will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
